Research Question(s):

Community health workers (CHWs) often provide patient education and care coordination in community health center (CHC) settings. CHWs have unique skill sets to support patient education, connect patients with resources, and understand patient needs in the context of their culture and community. Both CHCs and CHWs are recognized as valuable research partners because of the trust and knowledge they hold with the patient populations they serve. This study asked if CHWs can help improve health for people with diabetes or high blood pressure by asking about and helping to address their social needs. CHWs asked people about needs related to food, housing, transportation, or medications and then helped to connect them with available services based on each patient’s given needs. CHWs then followed-up with each patient to see if they connected with any resources.

Research Question(s):

Many people with persistent atrial fibrillation have symptoms that continue or return after their first ablation procedure. When this happens, patients and doctors often consider a second ablation. However, there is not enough evidence to know which repeat ablation approach gives patients the best chance of feeling better and reducing future AF-related care.

REPEAT-AF asks whether adding left atrial posterior wall isolation to a repeat pulmonary vein isolation procedure improves symptoms, reduces atrial fibrillation recurrence, lowers AF burden, and reduces cardiovascular-related healthcare use compared with repeat pulmonary vein isolation alone. In plain language, the study asks: For adults who still have atrial fibrillation after a first ablation for persistent AF, does a more comprehensive repeat ablation help patients feel better and have fewer AF-related problems than the standard repeat ablation approach?

Nerve damage from diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) is a common condition that causes constant, life-disrupting pain for many people. This study will help determine:

  1. The best initial modality (oral, topical, or behavioral) for painful diabetic neuropathy, and
  2. whether to switch modalities or stay in those that fail.

Finding these answers is vital for helping people manage pain without relying on opioids and to let patients and doctors choose the treatments they prefer to ensure the focus is on what actually matters most to those living with this condition.
