PCORnet® Research Project Helped Advance the Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Clinical Care
A PCORnet®-enabled rapid-cycle research project funded by PCORI® laid critical groundwork for integrating patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) into routine clinical practice. Focused on heart failure care, the project demonstrated how standardized PROMs can be captured across health systems and linked with real-world clinical data using the PCORnet® Common Data Model. The work helped catalyze subsequent studies and tools that are expanding the use of PROMs to improve care delivery and patient-centered research across conditions.
In a recent Q&A session, Justin Bachmann, MD, MPH, reflects on how the project inspired him and his team to develop the Vanderbilt Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System (VPROMS), which leverages data insights from more than 3 million PROMs collected in routine clinical practice to drive meaningful improvements in care.
Learn How Investigators are Using the Power of PCORnet® in the New PCORnet® Playbook Case Studies Module
Find inspiration for your next patient-centered health research study in the PCORnet® Playbook Case Studies module. This new resource highlights real-world examples of how PCORnet® Study teams are leveraging the PCORnet® Common Data Model, collaborating with a research-ready network, and tapping into expert support to conduct research that advances health outcomes.
Whether you are new to using PCORnet® or building on prior experience, the case studies offer practical insights to help you design, launch, and accelerate impactful research.
PCORnet® CRN Site Profiles
Researchers can now explore detailed snapshots of real-world data and research capabilities across the eight PCORnet® Clinical Research Networks. The new PCORnet® CRN Site Profiles provide an overview of 78 partner sites, including patient populations, recruitment approaches, current study participation, and established links to other types of data such as medical claims. The site profiles are available to help teams identify collaborators and plan studies more efficiently from proposal through implementation.
PCORnet® Population Insights Report Highlights the Capacity of the Network to Support Research on Sensory Health
A new PCORnet® Population Insights Report on patients with sensory health conditions receiving health care services at clinical sites participating in PCORnet is now available. The report is an important resource for researchers, enabling them to assess how PCORnet resources can be used to conduct national-scale, patient-centered research to improve sensory health.
Fast Health Care Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Create New Opportunities for Participation in Research Powered by PCORnet®
A research article in the recent PCORnet® Medical Care supplement examines how Fast Health Care Interoperability Resources (FHIR) can support data activities across the PCORnet infrastructure, particularly for organizations that do not maintain a PCORnet® Common Data Model.
Drawing on lessons from FHIR pilot projects led by the Coordinating Center for PCORnet®, the study highlights where FHIR-based data extracts may be well suited for certain research use cases and identifies key considerations for leveraging FHIR to expand access to real‑world data for patient-centered research.
A recent supplement to the journal Medical Care, “PCORnet®: Accelerating Patient-Centered Comparative Clinical Effectiveness Research,” features 19 peer-reviewed, open-access articles that demonstrate the scientific value of PCORnet in advancing patient-centered health research.

PCORI® Funding Opportunities

PCORI Funding Opportunities Now Open
PCORI released the Cycle 2 2026 Improving Methods for Conducting Patient-Centered Comparative Clinical Effectiveness Research (CER) funding announcement on April 1, 2026. This program seeks to fund studies that address high-impact methodological gaps in patient-centered CER. Funds are available for patient-centered measurement, real-world data, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and improving study design to further patient-centered CER.
PCORI has also released a Broad Pragmatic Studies funding opportunity including a “Category 3” option for researchers aiming to use PCORnet to conduct patient-centered comparative CER. Investigators can also apply for funding for structured mentorship activities for early- or mid-career investigators; investigators making a transition to patient-centered CER; and patient and community partners.
Review all PCORI funding opportunities as you consider how to use PCORnet resources to achieve your research goals.

Best Practice Sharing Session
Join the Coordinating Center for PCORnet® for upcoming Best Practice Sharing Sessions.
April 22 at 12 pm (ET)
In this webinar, Dr. Yong Chen, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will present a practical overview of privacy-preserving distributed algorithms (PDA) for federated learning across multi-institutional networks, based on his PCORI-funded methods award using PCORnet. The session will highlight how PDA enables association, causal, and subphenotyping analyses without sharing individual-level patient data, drawing on real-world deployments within PCORnet and other national research networks. Learn more.
May 6 at 12 pm (ET)
In this webinar, guest speakers from Datavant, Claire Manneh and Alyna Dada, will provide an overview of Datavant’s engagement with PCORnet, including how PCORnet® CRNs can collaborate with Datavant on research projects, pathways for partnership, and how Datavant can support network-wide connectivity. The presentation also will highlight Datavant’s core offerings, including privacy-preserving record linkage, Datavant Connect for partnership discovery, and capabilities that enable scalable, multi-site research and real-world evidence generation.
