Richard Bankowitz, Director

A board-certified internist and medical informaticist, Dr. Bankowitz has devoted his career to improving healthcare quality at the national level by promoting rigorous, data-driven approaches to quality improvement and by engaging senior clinicians and healthcare leaders in both payer and provider segments. He currently provides consultative services in the areas of quality measurement, performance improvement and payment reform as founder of Prudentia Heathcare Consultants, LLC, a data analytic and methodological consultancy.
Prior to this, Dr. Bankowitz served the Chief Medical Officer of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). In this role, he worked closely with the clinical leaders of major healthcare insurance plans to promote high-value health care for consumers.
He was named by Modern Healthcare as one of the top 25 clinical informaticists in the US for three consecutive years: 2010 – 2012, and as one of the top 50 physician executives in 2012 and 2013.
Prior to joining AHIP, Dr. Bankowitz served as chief medical officer of Premier Inc., a nation-wide alliance of healthcare systems. Here he worked at an enterprise level to engage physicians, provide thought leadership, and ensure that Premier continued to deliver value to its clinician constituency. Earlier, he served as vice president and medical director for Premier Healthcare Informatics.
Previously, he was medical director at CareScience, a health care improvement company, where he was responsible for clinical product strategy and physician relationships.
Dr. Bankowitz also served as the corporate information architect of the University HealthSystem Consortium (now Vizient), where he was responsible for the strategic direction of the organization's executive reporting tools and comparative data products.
He began his career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he served on the faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and medical informatics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP®), and was a National Library of Medicine graduate trainee in medical informatics.
